The production of pre-baked anode carbon blocks uses petroleum coke as the raw material and coal asphalt as the binder. Through processes such as calcination of petroleum coke, medium crushing, screening, grinding, batching, mixing, molding, and baking, they are processed and manufactured. The production process of pre-baked anodes mainly consists of three steps: calcination - molding - baking. During the calcination stage, petroleum coke can generate a large amount of residual heat for power generation. If an enterprise does not have a calcination process, it needs to purchase calcined coke (the product after the calcination of petroleum coke) and electricity to meet production needs. The electrolytic aluminum industry is the downstream industry of the pre-baked anode industry, and pre-baked anodes are mainly used in the production of primary aluminum.
The raw material cost of pre-baked anodes accounts for a relatively high proportion. The costs of petroleum coke and coal asphalt account for approximately 75% of the production cost of pre-baked anodes. Among them, petroleum coke is the raw material for pre-baked anodes, accounting for more than 80% of the total weight of pre-baked anodes.
Petroleum coke and coal tar pitch are the main raw materials for the production of pre-baked anodes. Producing 1 ton of pre-baked anodes requires 1.09 tons of petroleum coke and 0.17 tons of coal tar pitch. Our country has abundant resources of petroleum coke and coal tar pitch, and the sufficient supply of raw materials provides a solid foundation for the development of the pre-baked anode industry. In 2021, the output of petroleum coke in China was 302.95 million tons, and the output of coal tar pitch was 5.44 million tons. As a supporting industry of the aluminum industry, its development is inseparable from the progress of electrolytic aluminum technology and the development of the aluminum industry. The development of the aluminum industry has also driven the growth of the pre-baked anode industry. Approximately 0.5 tons of pre-baked anodes are needed for every 1 ton of primary aluminum produced. According to data from the National Bureau of Statistics: In 2021, the output of primary aluminum in China was 385.03 million tons, and the output of alumina was 774.75 million tons.
